Handwritten letter which has been cropped to remove some of the text. In the section that remains, Orpen writes that he is painting Sir Eric Barrington's portrait and that the 'bear picture is bum' at the moment. The letter is continued on the reverse with a sketch of the artist asleep at a table.

Orpen painted Sir Eric Barrington's portrait and 'The Rest' (Edith, George and Bear) in 1910. From 1909 to 1915 Orpen rented a house every summer at the Cliffs, Howth for him and his family to spend the summer holidays. It was at Howth in 1910 that he met Edith and George
