Handwritten letter which has been cropped to remove some of the text. In the section that remains there is a sketch of a wounded man holding a rifle. He is standing at Howth Harbour, County Dublin. Below the sketch is the written 'Howth Harbour, Sunday 27th July 1914'.

From 1909 to 1915 Orpen rented a house every summer at the Cliffs, Howth, County Dublin where he and his family could spend the summer holidays. In the summer of 1914 Orpen witnessed the first Howth Gun Running on 27th July.
