The petrified dairy
Illustration depicting the petrified dairy, a natural rock of a tabular form with five basin-like hollows on the surface each filled with a stone of a long oval form fitting the space fully, located in the townland of Garranes (Gaeilge: Na Garráin), near Bunane (Gaeilge: An Bunán), Co. Kerry. According to tradition, St. Fiachna turned the diary of a woman who lived here into stone because she was making butter from milk she stole by milking the cows of her neighbours at night. The oval stones are said to be petrified rolls of butter, p. 121. Woodcut by Ebenezer Landells (1808-1860) after John Windele (1801-1865).
